On October 13, 2025, the United States Navy celebrates its 250th birthday, marking a legacy of strength, resilience, and service to the nation. Established in 1775 by the Continental Congress, the Navy was created to protect American interests during the Revolutionary War with a resolution to outfit two armed vessels to intercept British supply ships. This laid the foundation for one of the world’s most formidable naval forces. As we head into Fleet Week in New York, this milestone offers a vibrant opportunity to honor the sailors, past and present, who have served with courage. Fleet Week, a cherished tradition, brings Navy ships, sailors, and demonstrations to the city, allowing the public to engage with the Navy’s mission and celebrate its storied history alongside other military branches marking their 250th anniversaries in 2025.
Joining the Navy, the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps also commemorate their 250th birthdays in 2025, each tracing their origins to the Revolutionary War. The Army, established on June 14, 1775, predates the nation itself, formed to defend the colonies against British forces. Celebrations include a grand parade in Washington, D.C., on June 14, featuring 6,600 soldiers, 150 vehicles, and 50 aircraft, alongside nationwide events like the Army Birthday Ball and community festivals. The Marine Corps, founded on November 10, 1775, will mark its milestone with capstone events, including a commemoration at Independence Hall in Philadelphia and Marine Weeks across major cities, showcasing its warfighting spirit.
From humble beginnings, these branches have grown into global powerhouses, defending freedom, projecting power, and ensuring security. The Army has been a cornerstone of national defense, from the Revolutionary War to modern conflicts. The Navy operates advanced ships, submarines, and aircraft to maintain open seas and deter aggression. The Marine Corps, known for its expeditionary prowess, continues to embody “Semper Fidelis” — Always Faithful. Celebrations for all three include ceremonies, historical exhibits, and public events, such as the Navy’s Blue Angels flyover in Philadelphia and the Army’s “This We’ll Defend” campaign, with tributes to their enduring mottos.
As we celebrate Fleet Week in New York, with Navy ships docked and performances by military bands, the 250th anniversaries of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps unite the nation in honoring their shared legacy. These milestones, marked by events like the Army-Navy Cup soccer match and Marine Corps Birthday Ball, reflect centuries of sacrifice and service. Looking forward, these branches continue to innovate with technologies like unmanned vessels and cyber warfare capabilities, ensuring readiness for future challenges. Here’s to 250 years of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps — a legacy of valor and vigilance, celebrated vibrantly in 2025.
