Press Release
For Immediate Release
Moyock, NC – April 16, 2024
Today, Blackwater Reports founder Thom Roddy announced a pivotal development in the ongoing saga of reporting on the Currituck County government. Despite facing continued threats from Currituck public officials and their use of the courts to hinder Blackwater Reports and Roddy from covering critical public issues, there is a newfound threat to continued coverage of the county at this time.
The relentless efforts to stifle Blackwater Reports and Roddy’s ability to exercise their First Amendment rights have been a significant impediment to their journalistic pursuits. However, amidst these challenges, they remain resolute in their commitment to transparency and accountability in Currituck County governance. Roddy said Blackwater Reports will continue its investigation into government overreach and public corruption but will likely cease reporting on the county until legal relief is obtained. Roddy said he and Blackwater Reports Inc. will file a First Amendment suit naming Currituck County and several officials in the U.S. District Court in the late summer to early fall.
Roddy expressed gratitude for the unwavering support received from the community and emphasized the importance of continuing the mission to shed light on matters of public interest. Despite the obstacles, Blackwater Reports remains dedicated to upholding the principles of free speech and press. Blackwater Reports continues to seek the financial support of its readers and community to further its objectives and seek redress through the courts. Readers can easily make tax-deductible donations through our trusted partners, Stripe and PayPal.
Regrettably, Blackwater Reports will cease its essential investigative coverage of the severe issues plaguing Currituck County under threats of fines and imprisonment. These include grave matters of public trust and misuse of county resources. The insidious application of prior restraint has prevented Blackwater Reports from fulfilling its duty to the public by reporting on these critical matters.
Blackwater Reports reaffirms its commitment to serving the public interest and delivering fact-based investigative journalism as it navigates the complexities of reporting on local government affairs. With this latest development, it stands poised to continue its vital work in uncovering the truth and promoting transparency in Currituck County.
Roddy announced his decision to step back from the day-to-day operations at Blackwater Reports. For any inquiries, Craig Jackson will handle communications.
