In what can be considered a significant success on the heels of the failed Moyock Wastewater Treatment Plant, Currituck County Manager Ike McRee, supporting county staff and Senator Bobby Hanig, among many others, worked tirelessly, resulting in Currituck receiving 16 million in state funds for wastewater treatment.
House Bill 259 was presented to the Governor for signature on 22 September 2023, and the Governor, having yet to approve it within the time prescribed by law, became law on 3 October 2023. The sixteen million dollars ($16,000,000) will go to Currituck County and will be distributed as follows:
- Six million dollars ($6,000,000) for the Mainland Water Treatment Plant project.
- Ten million dollars ($10,000,000) for the Moyock water or wastewater system.
Currituck is currently so out of compliance with state regulations that the entire Moyock Wastewater Treatment Plant had to be shut down and leased units brought in to process wastewater. The 16 million dollars from the state represents a savings to the county and its citizens in bringing wastewater treatment into compliance with state regulations and laws.
