The Weapemeoc occupied Currituck before European colonization.

Information about the Weapemeoc, also known as the Weapemeococ, is limited due to the lack of extensive written records and the disruption caused by European colonization. However, here is some general information known about the Weapemeoc:

  1. Location: The Weapemeoc lived in what is now eastern North Carolina, primarily in the present-day area of Currituck County. Their territory was located along the coastal plains and included parts of the Outer Banks.
  2. Language and Culture: The Weapemeoc belonged to the Algonquian language family, which was common among many Native American tribes in the area. However, specific details about their language and cultural practices are not well-documented.
  3. Subsistence: Like other Native American tribes in the region, the Weapemeoc relied on hunting, fishing, and gathering for sustenance. They engaged in activities such as farming, fishing in rivers and coastal waters, and harvesting natural resources from their surroundings.
  4. Contact with Europeans: The Weapemeoc encountered European explorers and colonists during the 16th century. English explorers, including Thomas Harriot and John White, encountered and interacted with the Weapemeoc in their attempts to establish the Roanoke Colony.
  5. Displacement and Assimilation: Over time, European colonization disrupted the traditional way of life for the Weapemeoc and other indigenous tribes. Disease, conflicts, forced assimilation, and land encroachments contributed to the decline in their population and cultural practices.

It’s important to note that due to the scarcity of written records from the perspective of the Weapemeoc themselves, much of our knowledge about them comes from European accounts and archaeological evidence.

The most important thing about the Weapemeoc is that they were here first.
